Localizing the Southern Ocean Biogeochemical Divide

چکیده
Abstract The meridional overturning circulation consists of an upper and lower cell. Southern Ocean Biogeochemical Divide (SOBD) is the boundary between two cells in surface Ocean, but its location poorly constrained. Localizing SOBD important because biological nutrient utilization north south have fundamentally different consequences for global ocean primary production carbon sequestration. Here, we aim to localize by releasing virtual Lagrangian particles 40°S eddying sea‐ice model compare simulation results with observations. We find that a circumpolar band, where sectors are shaped oceanographic features: (a) Ekman transport, (b) γ = 27.6 kg m −3 neutral density outcrop, (c) fronts associated Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Our findings help understand how parts affects biologically driven

متن کاملAn iron curtain in the Atlantic Ocean forms a biogeochemical divide.
The concept of biogeochemical provinces in the ocean was implicit in Longhurst’s (1) classic monograph, Ecological Geography of the Sea. Longhurst identified distinct oceanic zones based on the relationships of oceanic biology (using chlorophyll, a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, and primary production) to physical forcing (e.g., surface currents, mixing depth, and upwelling). As we have advan...
متن کاملCorrection: The Biogeochemical Role of Baleen Whales and Krill in Southern Ocean Nutrient Cycling
The availability of micronutrients is a key factor that affects primary productivity in High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll (HNLC) regions of the Southern Ocean. Nutrient supply is governed by a range of physical, chemical and biological processes, and there are significant feedbacks within the ecosystem. It has been suggested that baleen whales form a crucial part of biogeochemical cycling processes...

متن کاملBiogeochemical variability in the upper ocean
Differences in the response times of different biogeochemical tracers to upper ocean forcing processes can lead to substantial differences in their patterns of variability. An idealized tracer with a steep vertical concentration gradient is modeled in a flow field representative of an upper ocean front. The surface distribution of the tracer is studied as a function of its response or restorati...
